O-Range Smoke Control Panel: Complete Guide

The O-Range smoke control panel is a dedicated AOV control unit designed to manage smoke and heat ventilation systems in residential and commercial buildings. Available in single-zone and multi-zone configurations.

What Is an O-Range Smoke Control Panel?

O-Range is the dedicated smoke control panel range supplied by AOV Direct, specifically engineered for AOV (Automatic Opening Vent) systems in buildings where smoke ventilation is required under Approved Document B or BS 9991. The panels receive signals from optical smoke detectors and trigger actuators to open vents in the correct sequence.

O-Range panels are designed for straightforward installation and commissioning, with clearly labelled terminals, integral zone indication LEDs, and a logical menu structure for setting detector sensitivity and override functions.

Single-Zone O-Range Panel

The single-zone O-Range panel controls one smoke ventilation zone — typically a single stairwell or corridor run. It accepts inputs from optical smoke detectors on a conventional zone circuit and provides 24 V DC output to drive multiple actuators simultaneously. The panel includes integral battery charging for a connected 7Ah or 17Ah sealed lead-acid battery, mains and battery status indication, and a manual test function.

Multi-Zone O-Range Panel

Multi-zone O-Range panels are configured for buildings with more than one smoke ventilation zone. Each zone can be individually activated by its own set of detectors, and the panel provides zone-by-zone indication and override. Multi-zone panels are standard in larger residential blocks, hotels, and offices where the fire strategy divides the building into independently managed smoke ventilation areas.

Key Features of O-Range Panels

All O-Range panels include: 230 V AC mains input with integral transformer; 24 V DC regulated output for actuators; conventional detector zone inputs with adjustable sensitivity; separate accept and reset functions; manual override for all zones; battery backup with continuous charge monitoring and fault indication; and clearly labelled terminal strips with DIN-rail mounting.

Wiring an O-Range Panel

O-Range panels use a standard terminal block layout. The mains supply (230 V AC) connects to the integral transformer. The 24 V DC output feeds the actuator circuit. Detector circuits connect as conventional 2-wire zones with an end-of-line resistor. Manual override push-button stations connect as normally-open inputs.

All wiring should use fire-rated cable (typically 2-core × 1.5 mm² MICC or FP200 Gold) to ensure circuit integrity for the duration of the fire. Wiring runs should avoid areas of fire risk where possible and be mechanically protected where they pass through vulnerable areas.

Commissioning

On commissioning, each detector zone should be activated in turn using a test aerosol or panel test function, and the opening of all associated vents confirmed. Battery backup should be tested by disconnecting the mains supply and confirming that the system maintains full operation. Results should be recorded in the commissioning certificate.
