The stairwell is the most critical escape route in any multi-storey building. Under Approved Document B and BS 9991, residential blocks above 11 metres must provide smoke ventilation of the common stair to maintain tenable conditions for evacuation. What Is Included in a Stairwell AOV System?
A complete stairwell AOV system consists of: an AOV roof vent installed at the head of the stair (minimum 1.0 m² geometric free area), optical smoke detectors at each floor landing, an AOV control panel with mains supply and battery backup, manual override push-button stations at each floor level, and fire-rated wiring throughout.
Pre-Configured Stairwell Kits
AOV Direct offers complete stairwell kits containing the roof vent, O-Range control panel, 4A battery backup unit, and all ancillaries in a single order. Kits are available for the standard (1,100 × 1,100 mm) and access (with integrated roof hatch) OSTRO roof vents, and for the larger 1,100 × 1,500 mm format for wider stairwells.

The Ventec OSTRO Roof Vent
The OSTRO is AOV Direct's flagship stairwell roof vent. Certified to BS EN 12101-2, it opens to 140° for maximum smoke dispersal and operates on 24 V DC from the connected control panel. Powder-coated aluminium construction. Two standard sizes in stock for next day delivery; bespoke sizes available on 4–6 week lead time.
Control Panels and Battery Backup
The O-Range control panel manages the stairwell AOV system, receiving detector signals and triggering vent opening. It includes integral zone indication, manual test function, and fault monitoring. Battery backup units are specified to BS EN 12101-10, providing 72 hours standby and 60 minutes full activation following mains failure.
