BS EN 12101-10: AOV Battery Backup Requirements

BS EN 12101-10 defines the requirements for control and power supply systems for smoke ventilation. Understanding battery backup requirements is essential for system designers.

Why Battery Backup Is Required

AOV systems must continue to operate during a fire even if the mains power supply fails. BS EN 12101-10 therefore requires all smoke control panels to include a battery backup system capable of maintaining operation for a defined standby period.

Standby Duration Requirements

The standard requires a minimum 72-hour standby period in the non-activated state, followed by 30 minutes of full operation (i.e., with all outputs energised). This is the minimum; specific projects may require longer standby periods based on the fire strategy.

Battery Sizing

Battery sizing calculations must account for the quiescent current draw of the panel and all connected devices, the activation current for all outputs, temperature derating, and end-of-life capacity reduction. AOV Direct's technical team can assist with battery sizing calculations.

Testing and Certification

The battery backup system must be tested as part of the overall panel certification process. Third-party test evidence to BS EN 12101-10 is required for all panels used in AOV systems in the UK.
