What Is SDI 19?
SDI 19 is a certification scheme operated by the Smoke Control Association (SCA) for companies involved in the installation of smoke control systems. It assesses the competence of both the company and its installation operatives.
Why Was It Introduced?
SDI 19 was introduced in response to concerns about the quality and consistency of smoke control installation in UK buildings. Poorly installed or commissioned AOV systems have been implicated in a number of fire incidents where the system failed to operate as designed.
What Does It Cover?
SDI 19 covers the full installation process, including site survey, installation, testing, and commissioning of smoke control systems. Certified companies must demonstrate that they have the right processes, documentation, and trained personnel in place.
Implications for Specifiers
Specifiers and building owners should consider requiring SDI 19 certification for smoke control installation contractors. Under the Building Safety Act, demonstrating the competence of contractors is part of the dutyholder's responsibility.
