Overview
The Phase 1 report of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry, published in October 2019, examined the events of the night of 14 June 2017 and made a number of urgent recommendations to government and building owners. Phase 2, examining the broader circumstances, was published in 2024.
Evacuation
The report found that the 'stay put' advice given to residents was not changed to a 'full evacuation' early enough. It recommended that the Government work with building owners to assess the suitability of 'stay put' strategies in high-rise buildings, and that building owners develop and practice evacuation strategies for all residents.
Smoke Ventilation
Adequate smoke ventilation is a key component of a 'stay put' fire strategy. Where residents are expected to remain in their flats during a fire, it is essential that corridors and stairwells remain clear of smoke so that evacuation routes remain usable if needed. The Inquiry highlighted the importance of maintaining and regularly testing smoke control systems.
Implications for Building Owners
Building owners with residential high-rise buildings should review their smoke ventilation strategies and ensure that AOV systems are in full working order, regularly tested, and maintained. AOV Direct can provide technical support for system assessment and maintenance.
