School IAQ: Government £25m Ventilation Boost

The government allocated £25 million and 300,000 CO2 monitors to state schools to help improve indoor air quality and natural ventilation.

Background

Poor indoor air quality in schools has long been associated with reduced cognitive performance and increased absenteeism. The COVID-19 pandemic brought fresh attention to ventilation in educational settings, leading to government investment in improving IAQ across the state school estate.

The Government Programme

The Department for Education announced funding for CO2 monitors and air cleaning units for schools without adequate ventilation. Schools with CO2 readings above 1500 ppm were prioritised for remediation. Natural ventilation improvements, including AOV-style opening window systems, were among the solutions considered.

Natural Ventilation in Schools

Automated natural ventilation systems can provide a cost-effective and energy-efficient solution for improving IAQ in schools. AOV window actuators can be linked to CO2 sensors to provide demand-controlled natural ventilation, opening windows automatically when CO2 levels rise and closing them when levels fall.

AOV Direct's Offering

AOV Direct supplies window actuators and control systems suitable for natural ventilation in educational buildings. Our technical team can advise on suitable products and configurations for school ventilation projects. Contact us on 01202 725 677.
