25 million Reasons
To Read On

The government is aiming to allocate around 300,000 carbon dioxide (CO2) monitors to state schools in a £25 million scheme to help improve ventilation (from September 2021).
Levels of CO2 in a poorly ventilated classroom can rise dramatically over the course of a classroom session – this can lead to occupant drowsiness, poor concentration, and increased risk of spreading aerosol pollutants including COVID.

Ventilation
Strategy

The choice of ventilation strategy needs to account of the comfort criteria to be achieved, building layout, choice of building fabric; orientation, glazing, occupancy, usage patterns, proximity of noise and pollution sources, heating and cooling provisions, expected solar gain and aerosol spread pollutants.

Ventilation
Control

The user can override the automatic system at any time if required, such as during extreme wind or rain conditions. The room is fresh in the morning because the windows are slightly open allowing night purging. The closing force applied by actuators means that, from a security perspective, entry into the building is not possible. A pre-configured system will avoid draughts & excessive heating consumption in the winter.

Here Comes
The Science

• CO2 can’t be greater than 2,000 ppm (parts per million) for 20 minutes or more during an occupied day.

• Average CO2 during an occupied day must be less than 1,500 ppm.
